In 1974, one of the historians at Emporia State University had the idea of starting a Center for Great Plains Studies. What sparked your interest in studying/writing about Great Plains literature? Jim is also the author of nineteen books, (two of which you can find in the Chapman Center’s library, which is open to the public.) In my chat with Jim, we discussed his interest in studying Great Plains literature and folklore, his writing style, and he even shared some of his “cowboy poetry,” a genre of poetry that Jim himself is well-versed in. Jim is a retired professor of English at Emporia State University, where he also served as Director of the Center for Great Plains Studies.
